Welcome to my first post of, hopefully, many more to come with locals beta on Munising area ice conditions, approaches, and anchors!
The Crux!
Many have heard, or not (yikes), that the bridge to the standard parking lot into Potato Patch Falls, AGF, and Bridalveil is being replaced. That leaves us ice climbers needing to figure out another way into these classic Backcountry climbs.
Lucky for us that there is a way around but it does add substantial distance and time. If new snow has fallen there's a good chance that you'll need to add additional time to your approach. Trail breaking through new snow can easily add an hour to your trip in. Scaled approach skis or snowshoes are highly encouraged. Don't own a pair? Check out South Bay Outfitters. They have a robust rental fleet!
Maybe time to consider a guide to get you there ASAP??
The Beta!
You've got one and half options to consider when trekking out to Bridalveil this season. And it really comes down to conditions.
Option 1:
Use the North Country Trail from Miners Castle to loop around to the bottom of the cliff band/ steep sidehill. From the parking lot of Miners you will traverse the top of the band following the North Country Trail, keeping the steep side hill just to your left. The trail will navigate you down left and loop back towards Lake Superior. Follow the stream to the bridge and cross. This option is the longest but easiest to navigate.
Option 2:
Still use the North Country Trail from Miners Castle but take a shortcut. This option is best when there is plenty of snow and the ground is frozen. This eliminates possible erosion and environmental impact. And it shaves roughly 0.8 miles one way!
Instead of following the trail the entire way around and down the cliff band, cut skiers left and down over using a ridge and heading straight for the bridge across the creek. Lucky you, there is a GPX file below that you can use in the GAIA app!
After making it across the bridge you've got two more options to get to the traditional parking lot for Bridalviel and Potato Patch Falls. Either stay on the North Country Trail staying closer to the lake. This option is certainly more scenic but maybe it's a windy day. Your second option is to head to the road for Miners Beach parking. Once across the bridge you'll stay right and head towards the parking lot and connect with the road. Follow the road straight forward through the intersection for another .1 miles and you'll find yourself at the traditional parking lot for Potato Patch Falls and Bridalveil.
Having second thoughts? Consider hiring a guide!
