Gear Review: Leatherman Wingman Multi-tool

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Multi-tool vs. Single blade knife

Leatherman Multi-tool compared to Petzl Spatha.

Which do you prefer to carry? The answer. It depends. The heavy hitter; Multi-tools like this Leatherman Wingman have many different tools packed away inside ranging from two screw drivers to spring actuated pliers and a knife can be very useful to help solve real world problems when they occur. Ever have that screw gate carabiner that refuses to budge? BUT how many times does that situation occur? Instead maybe there’s a way to prevent that from occurring and carrying less weight? Multi-day trips with more than just climbing gear is where this tool performs. Ever have to fix a crampon, stove, or pack… Leatherman style tools are often bulky and heavy despite their usefulness.

A single blade knife like the Petzl Spatha has a serrated and a non-serrated section of knife to make easy removal of old or damaged tat. Its small size lends itself well to being racked on a harness next to your belay gloves on the far back of your harness away from mission critical soft goods. This new version (maybe new to me version) locks when open and prevents it from accidentally closing on your finger or hand. This knife shines on those short multi-pitch rock routes where an overnight isn’t in the plan. BUT knives like this are mostly a one pony trick.
