Gear Review: Cypher Piedmont Alpine Climbing Glacier Glasses

Updated: Aug 30, 2023

Going on a big climbing trip soon? You’ve probably been in search of a good pair of glacier glasses and immediately been shell shocked by seemingly sky high prices. Steep prices have led some climbers to abandon the Julbo, Oakley, and other big outdoor brands for regular old sunglasses that they’ve picked up from the convenience store on the way to the climb. Well, now there are the new Piedmont, Pacifico, and Powell glasses by Cypher Climbing.

Cypher Piedmont Alpine Glacier Glasses

The specs. All three glasses by Cypher feature the same type of lens, the largest difference being color and style. Each pair comes stock with 2mm shatterproof polycarbonate category 3 rated lenses that are 100% UV blocking. Now this is a lot of information. Let’s break it down. Being a category three lens means that it provides a high level of glare protection from light being reflected from snow and water. This rating incorporates UV blocking as well but only states “a high level of” but Cypher goes a step further with 100% UV blocking. Other nice features are the removable side pieces. In my experience I loose these pretty quickly regardless of brand preference. Piedmont comes with nose and side protection pieces as well but aren’t removable. Piedmont’s side protection is also more robust and able to block more light

Overall, my experience using the Piedmont has been phenomenal. They are comfortable to wear with a helmet since the legs are low profile, provide superb glare reduction, and the lens tint is perfect when skiing and ice climbing. The shatterproof lense is thin but worth its weight in gold! Each pair comes with a hard case with burly zipper and all at a price point you’ll love!
