Gear Review: AceCamp Ultralight Trekking Pole

This past winter I was lucky enough to work with AceCamp to try out their ultralight trail runner/ hiking pole. At first glance I had already written off the excitement that comes with picking up a new piece of kit. I mean, seriously, how exciting can a light but budget friendly pole set up really be? Thankfully I was dead wrong.

First Impressions

UPS dropped off the package and I couldn’t really believe that HIKING POLES could remotely begin to fit inside the wrappings. The padded envelope was small and very light! When “unboxing” the poles I immediately noticed a feature that I hadn’t yet seen in current pole construction technique…a snow probe-esque quick deploy pull cord! This piqued my interest due to true innovation! The poles ship with baskets included…nice bonus but they aren’t true snow baskets.

Construction

  1. Material: Four carbon fiber tubes create each section. At the end of each section is a cone shaped insert to make quick assembly possible. Red pull cord runs the length of, and through, each section. Dual level foam forms the grip. To finish off each pole, a tungsten carbide tip.

  2. Specs

  3. 100 grams per pole, carbon fiber

  4. Foam grip

  5. 4 sections

  6. Tungsten carbide tip

  7. Four sizes: 100cm, 110cm, 120cm, 130cm. Find your size here.

Function

Dual level foam grips made it easy and fast to transition to uphill and downhill mode quickly. And felt more secure than I thought possible! Borrowing from avalanche rescue probes, AceCamp successfully adapted the quick deploy method. This feature enables the sections to be tossed in front of you while simultaneously pulling the red cord allowing each section to snap into place in seconds.

Advantages

  1. Lightness of the poles make them easy to carry while running. With poles collapsed or extended, they didn’t get in the way.

  2. These poles are durable; withstanding the pressures of high and quick loading, have a slight bounce to them, and excellent traction achieved with the strong tungsten carbide tip.

  3. Built in velcro closures keep the sections together when collapsed.

  4. Quickly deploy with ease!
